We found out this week that we're moving to Kansas! Wichita, to be exact. Matt has been interviewing all over lately for a residency in Health Administration, and we finally received word back and we're excited to move there in May!
We never imagined we'd be moving there. Who lives in Kansas, anyway? I knew nothing about it. So, I've been doing some research. (It started with--where IS Kansas, anyway?) Here are a few random facts I found:
--Topeka is the capitol, but Wichita is the biggest city (pop. 380,000).
--Dodge City, Kansas is the windiest city in the United States.
--At least 90% of the land area in Kansas (47 million acres) is devoted to agriculture production.
--Kansas' "big sky," dramatic sunsets, and great variability in temperature and precipitation are all important aspects of the regional personality. Winter blizzards, violent windstorms, and heavy rains are common throughout the state, and the continental climate (on occasion) produces rapid temperature extremes.
--Pizza Hut opened its first store in Wichita.
--The Arkansas River may be the only river whose pronunciation changes as it crosses state lines. In Kansas, it is called the Arkansas (ahr-KAN-zuhs). On both sides of Kansas (Colorado and Oklahoma), it is called the Arkansaw.
Cool! Congrats, Team Johnston.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun adventure! I hear you will be visiting Modesto in Jan and we will be in Sac. Andrew will still be on winter break so if we get bored one day we might get to come up and visit!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a lot of fun! I am really happy for your family. Now we'll know someone from Kansas :)
ReplyDeleteThat is so exciting!!! I like Kansas. Josh and I lived in Kansas City (Overland Park area) for 3.5 months for summer sales and it was a neat place actually. Plus Nauvoo was only like 3.5 hrs away or so. Liberty Jail, Independence, MO are so close. We had 3 tornado sirens go off while we lived there and saw a tornado, but other than that, seemed like a great place. I am just so excited that you know where you are going and things came together for you :) Plus, there are quite a few great places there that have great BBQ food if you like that :) You have got to try Jack Stacks!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how I missed this post, but Eric told me about this the other day. I'm so glad for you guys! I know it feels great to have something lined up, and now you'll only be half a continent away from family ;)
ReplyDeleteI was born in Kansas, so I have always had a soft spot for that state. We moved when I was 3 weeks old, so obviously I don't remember it. I did my 5th grade state report on Kansas, so if you need more facts I could mail it to you :).
